Measure the Time Between Two Dates

This calculator finds the exact amount of time between any two dates and times, useful for counting down to a deadline, checking how long a project took, working out an age or anniversary span, or planning travel across several days.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or uploaded.

How the Difference Is Calculated

The calculator walks the real calendar instead of assuming every month is 30 days. It first counts whole months from the start date, then whole days, then the hours and minutes left over. So March 15 at 9:00 AM to May 20 at 5:30 PM is 2 months, 5 days, 8 hours, and 30 minutes, and January 1 to February 1 is exactly 1 month.

The totals underneath answer the other common question, "how many days (or hours) is that in all?" The same March to May range is 66 days, or 1,592.5 hours.

Counting Business Days and Working Hours

The Weekdays tile counts Monday through Friday, including both the start and end dates. That is the number most people mean by business days or working days: a project from Monday, January 5, 2026 to Friday, January 16, 2026 shows 11 total days (the gap between the dates) and 10 weekdays (Monday the 5th through Friday the 16th, counted inclusively).

To turn weekdays into working hours, multiply by your daily hours. Ten weekdays at 8 hours is 80 hours, the length of a standard bi-weekly pay period. Public holidays are not removed automatically, so subtract any that fall on a weekday in your range.

Things to Watch For

  • Daylight saving time. Total hours reflect the real elapsed time, so a range across the spring change is one hour shorter than days × 24.
  • End of month. January 31 plus one month lands on the last day of February. The total days figure is always exact if you need a precise count.
  • Leap years. February 29 is counted automatically, so a 2028 range that spans it includes the extra day.
  • Same-day ranges. For hours within a single day or an overnight shift, the time duration calculator is quicker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the time between two dates?

Pick a start date and time and an end date and time. The calculator shows the difference in years, months, days, hours, and minutes, plus the total number of days, hours, and minutes.

Does the order of the dates matter?

No. The calculator shows the length of time between the two dates either way, and tells you when the end is before the start. Use the swap button to flip them.

How are months counted?

Months are counted on the real calendar, so January 1 to February 1 is exactly 1 month even though January has 31 days. When the start falls on a day the end month does not have, such as January 31, the month ends on that month's last day (February 28 or 29). The total days figure is always exact.

How many business days are between two dates?

Enter both dates and read the Weekdays tile. It counts every Monday through Friday from the start date to the end date, including both. Public holidays are not subtracted, so take off any that fall on a weekday in your range.

How many weekdays are in 2026?

261. 2026 starts on a Thursday and has 365 days, so it holds 52 full weeks plus one extra Thursday. 2028, a leap year starting on a Saturday, has 260.

Why do total hours not equal total days × 24?

Daylight saving time. A range that crosses the spring change loses an hour, and one that crosses the fall change gains an hour. Total hours shows the real elapsed time, while the day count follows the calendar.

Is this date difference calculator free?

Yes. It is completely free, requires no account, and runs entirely in your browser.
