How Military Time Works
Military time uses a 24-hour clock that starts at 0000 (midnight) and runs to 2359. There is no AM or PM. Converting is simple: morning hours match the clock (9:30 AM → 0930), and afternoon or evening hours add 12 to the hour (5:30 PM → 1730). To go the other way, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more and add PM.
Minutes Never Change
Only the hour converts. The minutes stay exactly as they are, so 4:24 PM becomes 1624 and 7:05 AM becomes 0705. Always write four digits, with a leading zero for hours before 10 (0705, not 705), and leave out the colon: 1624 is read as a single number.

Midnight and Noon: 0000, 1200, and 2400
The two 12 o'clocks cause most conversion mistakes. Noon, 12:00 PM, is 1200. Midnight, 12:00 AM, is 0000, the first minute of the new day, and the half hour after it is 0030, not 1230. You may also see 2400 used to mean the end of a day (a shift "from 1600 to 2400"); it refers to the same instant as 0000 the next day.
How to Say Military Time
Military time is read as two pairs of digits. Whole hours end in "hundred": 0800 is "zero eight hundred" and 1700 is "seventeen hundred." Other times read the minutes as a number: 1730 is "seventeen thirty" and 0915 is "zero nine fifteen." In the armed forces "hours" is often added ("fourteen hundred hours"), and a leading zero may be said as "oh."
Using Military Time on a Timesheet
The 24-hour clock makes hours worked easy to calculate because there is no AM/PM to trip over: subtract the start from the end. A shift from 0830 to 1715 is 17:15 − 8:30 = 8 hours 45 minutes, or 8.75 hours. For a shift that crosses midnight, such as 2200 to 0600, add 24 to the end first: (6 + 24) − 22 = 8 hours. Common Mistakes
- Writing 12:30 AM as 1230. It is 0030; 1230 is half past noon.
- Adding 12 to 12 PM. Noon is 1200, not 2400.
- Dropping the leading zero. 0705 has four digits; 705 can be misread.
- Converting the minutes. 3:45 PM is 1545; only the hour changes.
